GL1100 won't turn over with spark plugs installed

Post by mcphersonpk08 »

Hello all,
I am trying to figure out why the engine will not turn over when the spark plugs are installed. I took the starter out and tested it and it spins great. I reinstalled and could not get the engine to turn over. I removed all of the spark plugs and the engine seemed to turn over just fine. I seem to have good compression in each cylinder. I then proceeded to install 2 spark plugs and try again and the engine still turned over. I installed a 3rd and it seemed to have a bit more resistance but still turned over. However, when I installed the 4th plug it would not turn at all again. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Also, is anyone looking for an 83 Aspencade. I am literally just trying to get it running to sell as it was my dad's motorcycle and he can't ride anymore. Thought I would try and get it running before selling it but have been told that maybe I just sell it as is.

Thanks

If you don't have liquid in the cylinders, when you removed the plugs was there liquid squirting out?
Otherwise it sounds like you need to clean out the starter. They get carbon buildup in them and loose connectivity.
Look in the How To articles at the top of the page. How to remove and rebuild gl1100 starter.

There was no liquid in the cylinders and when i held my finger over each cylinder there was compression. I will attempt to tear apart the starter this week to see what I can find.

Thanks for the welcome. As I am ultimately trying to get rid of the motorcycle running or not, any idea as to where I could find its value or list it to sell it? Not sure what the interest is for 83 aspencades now a day.

There are a few that might be interested but value isn't real big. Top condition, low miles and running properly might bring $2,500.

The starter has a great load to crank when the plugs are in, as there is compression on all four cylinders at that point.

Starters that are in need of a rebuild can spin great without load, but completely stall out when under load.

What is the battery condition?
Freshly charged @>12.5 volts?
If not, do so (or jump-start it from a NOT-RUNNING car/truck).

If you're trying to SELL it, tell us your location. Plus, someone nearby might lend you a hand.
The 83 is one of the favorite years (1st true overdrive 5th gear, cast wheels, linked brakes, TRAC anti-dive).

Not running, expect lowball offers in the $500 or less range.
Running, starts and idles, stops fine, tires less than 5 years old - list it for $15-1800 and take any offer in that range.
That's just my opinion, but you have the attention of many experts on this site. Good luck.
When all else fails, RTFM!

Earl43P, I am located just outside Lafayette Indiana (Northwest Indiana). The battery is brand new. It ran just fine when my dad parked it a few years ago. I have rebuilt the rear caliper and rear master brake cylinder. I am about to rebuild the front right brake caliper as it is locked. I plan on replacing seals in front and rear suspension. To my knowledge everything on the bike is original with about 150k miles. It has a few scratches and sun fade on saddle bags.

Follow the battery ground cable to the three bolt engine mount. Brighten that lug and grounding surface up with sandpaper.
