Spedometer

Post by Skeldog »

I just joined the site. found some good tips already. I recently swapped for a 1982 GL 1100 that's been sitting for 8-9 years. got the carbs off and cleaned and back and have it running pretty good, went through the brakes- replaced all the caliper seals and pads and cleaned out the rear master cylinder so it will release the brake. moving on to tail lights not working-should'nt be an issue. but the spedometer is toast. previous owner said he was riding when it started jumping and smoke came up in the lens and it quit but the odometer still works. so anyway that tells me the drive and cable are intact, I think the tach looks to be mechanical and I plan to pull them and lube it. but I'm wondering whether there are any salvages that may have a used spedometer head worth the money.

The 80-82 speedometer only went to 85 mph and that was the demise of these when people ride them past their peg point. And yes the lube dries out in them over the years and gums up. You can get a 150 mph speedo off an 83 and use it on your 82 that would be a better investment.

Well I found an 83 speedo/tach and the whole shebang on ebay and bought it. kinda rushed since my wife has been pretty sick and I didn't look at the lictures close enough. what I thought was glare turned out to e a shattered lens on the spedometer. the seller said he would refund me if I wanted to return it. but he says it functions OK. I need to get the wife over this before dealing with the other.have any of you ever repaced the lens? mine is OK. and I should be able to salvage it. but I'm kinda wondering if they actually can be taken apart successfuly.

Yes they can be taken apart. You'll need a new band to crimp back on along with the glass.

Look up cb750faces.com his is in France and sells the parts to do it.
