Gl1100 is inconsistent in running Sometimes Runs Great other times not

Post by PhotoDoctor »

This is bike #37 for me in the last ten years or so. Many of them were not running when I bought them and this is my 5th GL1100 as I just had to try an ’83 with the taller 5th gear. I’ve done all the most standard items : fork seals and springs, brakes, valve steam seals, timing belts, removed clean and sync carbs and so on. I’ve also put about 9,000 miles on it and most of the time it ran very well.

Now in more recent history it sometimes runs great and other times has a lack of power, but it always idles great. I also put a fuel pressure gauge on it and a new fuel pump and have cleaned the carburetors a 2nd time…….well I really put another set on that I had already rebuilt and had on the shelf. (The bike ran perfect when I put this set of carbs on and took it for about a 50 mile ride – the next day it did not run so well – I also have a new stock fuel filter before the pump and a finer aftermarket after the pump)

Normally, when I have an older Honda the loss of power issues have always been carburetion….. but maybe this time it’s electrical. It has great spark when I test it in the garage. I am about to the point of swapping out coils and such to see if I can get some better results.
Any thoughts – what seems like a carburetor might really be electrical?

Have you removed the float from the gas tank and inspected for rust and debris?

Did the problem start after you installed the aftermarket fuel filter?

The problems started before the new fuel filter - I have also removed the sending unit and cleaned the tank before replacing all fuel lines and adding new fuel pump and new filters.

Air seems to be getting sucked into the fuel system - I'll attach a photo with the 2nd fuel filter showing - I have a lot of extra fuel line here to allow for a pressure gauge and such - the extra line will be removed once I've sorted the issue. (It has run great with this extra line but not today - during an interstate run part of the time I could not exceed 65 mph)

Also attached is a plug chop photo - the plugs look good - one side looks darker but it's on the shadow side of a cell phone photo. The plugs look pretty even.

I am wondering if air is being pulled in from the petcock or even from fuel tube inside the tank if it has a hole above the gas level (not likely) .........thinking about a small gravity fed gas tank for testing.

That horseshoe in the line and filter lower than the pump might be your problem.

I won't rule anything out - yet, I don't see how air could enter from the outgoing side of the pump this line should be under pressure at that point while anything before the pump would be on the suction side.

However, I will try removing all the extra plumbing and see what happens - as maybe the pump was not designed for the extra travel distance... ?

It was designed for straight gravity to the pump.

It was designed for straight gravity to the pump. The horseshoe is the weak link.

I'll make that my next step - running a stock like line from the pump to the carbs - either today or in a couple of weeks when I return from a bike trip. (On a different bike)

Thanks.

Well it will be a couple of weeks as I'm heading to the mountains. As a side note I mounted a fuel pressure gauge up on the fairing and it shows 1.5 psi all the time with the new pump- even with the air in the 2nd filter - but the tell will be trying a stock style fuel line.

The extended fuel line was not the problem. Perhaps the real problem is more along the lines of a weak coil..... I may have one of my friends add a clear fuel line to his GL1000 which has the same pump and see if it also has air bubbles in the fuel line.
