electronics

Post by Skeldog »

Well I may have messed it up this time. this old 82 GL 1100 has been running pretty good and I decided while I was cleaning it up I'd strip off the garbage I did not want. especially inside the fairing. I found what looked like all kinds of cables and boxes crammed in there and knowing I don't want any sound system I started removing them. including one box with a button that said dim on it bouncing around on the right side- an amplifier is what another looks like and a third box bolted down on the bottom on the right side. I was careful to check as I went that I still had lights- did diss connect the roght turn signal at one point but got it back and going. later I went out and turned the key and I've got nothing. battery still up but no lights or anything when I turn the key on/ I hope I've just knocked something loose and not removed something to do with the main operation - have I turned it into a junk pile or is all that stuff only to do with the sterio and CB like I assumed ir was?

when messing with wires it's not at all hard to blow a fuse, so check the main fuse as well as all the others. also make sure you havent left a ground wire dangling somewhere. green is ground, unless the P.O. did something weird.

Hopefully it's just that simple. if there are fuses other than the main box undr the gas lid I am not aware of them. I was just concerned that that one box that was hard mounted in the right side could be part of the main electrical system.but it says honda clarion so I'm pretty sure it feeds the radio system and the restb appear to be amp and such. I may very well have knocked something loose, but I did not think the wiring that feeds the main instrument panel ran through the fairing but just directly down the frame. but I sure may be wrong

No you are not wrong. My guess is that the main 30 amp dog bone may have bitten the dust, since you have nothing.
It is located on the left side of bike next to the battery. Move the rubber boot off and look to see what the dog bone looks like.
Check it with a volt meter.

While you are there replace the dog bone with a fuse holder for a 30 amp blade fuse.

What are you gonna do with the amplifier, pre amp, and tuner?

it is all spare to my needs. what I need is a working spedometer or complete dash unit either way. my odometer still works but the spedometer potion aparently broke. the tach is fine since I lubed it and the cable. but I have no problem swapping the stuff from inside the fairing and maybe even the radio unit itself it I could get a clean blank plate to replace it

yes I did- and it was the dog bone fuse. a simple fix once I learned where it was. runs great now and I have what seems to be a reliable ride now thanks to you folks help. outside of the intermittent temp and fuel gage it's doing fine.I suspect it could be to do with the volrage reducer I read about but I have not really worried about that. I need to get it on the highway and ride now.
