GL1100 not turning over
Hi, guys
I've got an 82 Aspencade, and I've had her running recently. I left the petcock open accidentally and flooded the engine. After pulling the plugs, my solenoid still only clicks. I've got a new starter, battery, and solenoid. Is it possible that the gas degraded the oil's viscosity enough that the engine won't turn over? I'm hoping that an oil/filter change will help here.
Thanks,
Nate

Re: GL1100 not turning over
you can prove it to yourself by draining the oil/gas cocktail and attempting to crank the engine with an empty crankcase. the oil and filter have to be replaced regardless.
did you clean the cable connectors when you replaced the battery/starter/solenoid ? if you bought one of those $8 china solenoids you may want to put your old one back in.

Well, I burned the fuse on my old solenoid, and replaced the solenoid with a modern unit. After the engine stopped turning, I replaced the fuse on the original with a blade fuse, and went back to the old solenoid. Strong click, still no dice. I have noticed that with the bike on the center stand, it does not turn easily by rotating the rear wheel.

Measure the voltage at the starter when you press the starter button. Compare that to the voltage at the battery positive terminal, again when you press the starter button.

12.7 across the terminals, and 12.7 at the post on the starter, with the start button pushed.

once in a while a starter will get locked in the ring gear on a vehicle. I'm pretty sure it's possible on the wing. you can put it in gear-preferably high and roll it while letting off the clutch to see that the engine rolls and if it's locked it should drop out.

Problem is inside the starter then, it will need to come off and be opened for inspection. This is a new starter?

No ring gear/bendix in a GoldWing. Starter is a chain-drive to a sprag clutch (one-way clutch).Skeldog wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 3:11 pm once in a while a starter will get locked in the ring gear on a vehicle. Yeah, I'm starting to think the problem is with the starter. Gonna pull it in an hour or so, and I'll be back with (very likely) more questions.DenverWinger wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 3:43 pmProblem is inside the starter then, it will need to come off and be opened for inspection. Re: GL1100 not turning over
General update: I pulled the starter and bench tested it. No dice.
It was a brand new starter from DB electrical. I called them up, and they're shipping a new one, no questions asked.
So, we'll go from there.

Re: GL1100 not turning over
A bit unusual for a new starter dead on arrival. When attaching the power cable to the starter post be very careful NOT to allow the post to accidentally turn. Use a backup wrench on the post. It is possible to twist off the internal wire connection on that post.

It worked for a few weeks, to be accurate. Just kinda gave up after a few turns one day.

Re: GL1100 not turning over
You said you pulled the plugs... Did you try to crank it over while the plugs were out to expell any liquid out of the cylinders as any liquid in the cylinders will hydrolock the motor which keeps it not spinning over??
Also, remove the access cap on the stator cover to access the 12mm stator bolt head and turn it righty tighty to ensure the motor spins over freely by hand. I had a parts bike that the previous owner's son turned the bolt lefty loosey with the plugs in, to adjust the valves, and loosened the bolt enough that next ride dad rode to work, the motor locked up because the bolt and stator rotor backed out and the rotor locked against the stator case.

Re: GL1100 not turning over
It will manually turn, so it's not hydrolocked. I was honestly hoping for hydrolock, because I don't mind the carb work.
