leaking rear drive

Post by Skeldog »

I notice after mine sat a couple weeks I have enough oil leaking out of the rear drive that it has run down onto the wheel and a little on the sidewall of the tire to the floor.I drained it about a month ago and put a little clean deisel in the gearbox and let it drain out the drain plug. with it standing on the center stand I then filled it with 90 weight up to the bottom of the fill plug opening. rode it some and it's been sitting for a week. I'm wondering whether it's a very big job to replace the seal or if I just need to wipe it and maybe try adding a little bit of seal treatment to see if it might soften it. the bike sat for 8-9 years previously and it did not have much oil in the drive when I drained it. and additionally. I notice the oil level is virtually impossible to see in the crankcase window. I only have a few hundred miles on it and I guess it's just too clear. I had even drained it into a clean pan once to verify I had the correct amount and it was correct.

I have had a same problem and dilema what should I do.I bought anather rear drive with waranthy that seels are OK,and just under 10k still no leaks.Trying to refresh seels is quick and easy step .If it works fine if not get the other set.
Replacing old seels requires special tools ,knowledge ,shims,TIME,TIME,TIME.
IMPORTANT-check out splines condition first ,if worn you need replacement rear drive set.
Guys on site suggest to puck splines with grease up to the rim.I some how disagree with that advice..In my case I used Honda Moly 60% grease. You should apply grease just to cover splines and splines groves and the same thing with mating splines on the rear wheel.Moly will stay in place and do the job.DO NOT forget to instal new gasket on the rear drive that seels splines. Not having gasket is reason why splines loose grease and rust out.
I hope this helps ,good luck.

Just a quick tip on reading oil in the sight glass. Use a small UV flashlight. They are available at a very reasonable cost on amazon etc. The oil shows as green in the glass. Works GR8
