SMOKE!!!

Post by radfordgoldwingresto »

Good Morning Everyone!
It's November 6th and a recent warm spell inspired me to ride to work today. It's been about 5 days since my GL1100 has run. It was a cold morning but not too cold for it to fire and run. (About 40 degrees). When it turned over a large amount of smoke came from the left side. I couldn't tell if it was from the head or if it was coming from the timing belt cover. It idled well enough and didn't need choking but I was too afraid to run it to work. I left it to rest. Any advice? The smoke didn't smell like coolant but I could be wrong. It was light in color but because it was cool out, some of that could have been vapor.

I need some advice. What should I check?

Two questions:

1. Was the bike on its side stand or center stand in the days before you started it?

2. If you let it run and warm up, does the smoke go away?

When these bikes are let to sit on their side stand, gravity will cause oil to seep past the valve seals and into the intake on the left side. This causes smoke upon startup, but as soon as that oil burns away, the smoke should stop.

That makes sense. I'll try to warm it up. I was afraid to let it run.

Was the smoke out of the muffler or out of the side of the head?? How much smoke?
If out the side of the head, check the exhaust bolts on the head. If you use a mc jack without blocks added under the motor to keep the weight off the exhaust you have crushed the exhaust donuts and the colder temps(metal shrinks when cold) allowed exhaust gasses to escape out the header instead of out the muffler.

Look at the top of the head with a light and mirror for leaks.

If you don't find any, put it on the center stand overnight and light it the next morning. If smoke starts, look some more with mirror and light.

I think it must have been a combination of being on the side stand and the cold morning. When I returned that afternoon and started it, the head didn't smoke. I've begun the habit of putting it on the center stand for longer periods of not riding and we'll see if the smoke returns. Thanks guys!

The reason I asked the questions is what I've found......
