GL1100 Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Mounting Location?

Post by WingMan71 »

I am trying to get a 4-Gauge Meter Panel properly connected on my 1983 GL650 Silver Wing Interstate. This is the same meter panel designed for the GL1100 Interstate and Aspencade. (All three bikes have the same fairing so all Hondaline accessories interchange.)

Here's a pic of the meter panel.

I have the sub-wiring harness G necessary to connect the voltmeter and clock, but I can't figure out how to route the thick black cable for the ambient temperature gauge and where the sensor on the end of it is supposed to be mounted.

Here's a pic of the wires on the back.

All the wires from the gauges are pushed through a hole behind this meter panel and into the inside of the fairing.

That works for all the bullet connectors since they connect to the wiring harness inside the fairing. But, that doesn't work for the thick temperature gauge cable and sensor. Once its inside the fairing there is no hole in the bottom of the fairing to get it back out and exposed to the outside air. Plus, if you did somehow get it out of the fairing, where does it mount?

(I'm starting to wonder if its supposed to be mounted inside the fairing so that it's exposed to air coming in one of the two air vents routed through the fairing.)

If someone with this setup on their bike would please look at it and let me know where and how it mounts, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for any help!

The panel you got was from 1980 and 81.
Looks like it has a clamp? on the thermistor to mount below the fairing. It has to be exposed to outside air flow not inside the fairing at all.
My 83 had a digital temperature gauge and a different thermistor that went through a grommet out the bottom surface of the fairing. The installation instructions used to be available and I had a bookmark for it years ago on a long lost computer......
I don't have the 83 available to take pictures either.
If you are going to use the one you have you'll have to maybe get a 3/4" grommet?? to go into the fairing from the upper section and get creative on mounting it under the fairing to get a good air flow over it. I haven't seen one like yours mounted.

Looking closer at the enlarged pictures, it looks like you could unscrew the lead at the back of the gauge to feed the lead through smaller holes then get a rubber grommet to fit the thermistor out the bottom surface of the fairing(very tight clearance under the headlight to feed it in place! So it is close to the front of the fairing nose) it only needs to protrude through the grommet a 1/2" if I remember correctly(11 years since my install of it)
The bracket on the thermistor bolt hole might bolt through a hole towards the fork tunnel of the fairing like the radio parts mounting bolts do, to set the thermistor height and location of the hole needed for the grommet??? You'll have to be creative if you don't get the instructions. I think I got my instructions through someone on the goldwingfacts forum back in 2009. I haven't been back on that forum since it sold out in 2013 to the mc .com group that screwed the pooch on searching old posts by mobile phone. If you are on a computer you could try a search on there.
You can get grommets at most hardware stores to fit

Thanks for your replies newday777.

I just got a couple of pictures from members of the Steve Saunders Gold Wing forum that showed where the wire is routed and the sensor probe mounted. I'll see if I can post them up here.

The thick cable is routed down the back side of the fairing. Looks to me like they just mounted the sensor probe on the bottom of the fairing with a pop rivet.
