Front brakes locking up.

Post by norseman47 »

I have a '82 GL1100 Interstate. Last year the front brakes locked up; hard. I rebuilt both front calipers, with new pistons, & ran DOT5 fluid thru the front system, pulling it thru with a vacuum pump. Brakes still locked up. I rebuilt the master cylinder, added DOT5 thru system & the system still locks up.

What am I missing?

While an internal deterioration of the rubber brake lines is a possibility, I'd guess the following is the more probable fault and fixing it will solve the problem:
In the master cylinder there is a very small (tiny) bleed hole that allows fluid to flow back into the reservoir when the master cylinder piston retracts. Look down thru the reservoir to locate two machined holes from the reservoir into the bore with the piston. Both must be clear. Some owners swear there is only 1 hole, as the tiny hole is so plugged they think it is a blind hole that was never drilled out. Look for DIY articles on this forum that show pics and have further comments on master cylinder rebuilds.
