engine removal stuck at rear subframe
Good Evening Fellas,
I am trying to investigate my strange noise explained in this thread
viewtopic.php?p=365528#p365528
The idea is to remove the engine, take a look at the starter clutch and do some maintenance work. I have a new stator, starter clutch service kit, engine gasket and seal kit and some other things on hand.
Currently I am stuck at removing the rear part of the subframe.
The nuts are off.
The engine is hovering on the jack, all mounts are off, the drive shaft circlip was fun and it looks like it wants to come out.
The front part of the subframe came off with a little mallet persuasion but the rear will not budge.
I have tried attacking it also from the other side with a car jack handle and a hammer and I think I flattened it a bit (photo).
When I try to pull on the front away from the frame I can feel that I am about to bend it.
So is it just rusted badly and needs more banging, am I missing something completely or was it welded in?
The service manual says to just remove the nuts and take it off.
Thanks

First time I pulled that apart on my '80 it was rusted somewhat and took some good persuasion and bad words.
Soak it down real good with something that likes rust for lunch. It is supposed to come apart without persuasion.

So you did get the circlip off? A lot of fun!!!
The frame did not get welded at Honda. It should come off if some one has not welded it.
Be careful of the brake lines when you do get it free.

I LOVE the circlip. Six-pack of beer required for the circlip! (and more bad words)

Re: engine removal stuck at rear subframe
When I pulled back the boot, I did not see any circlip even turning the wheel back and forth.
Time to google search...
Pulling the boot to the front and holding it with a hose grip revealed it all.
Took 3 minutes and broke my cheap HF pliers.
I pried it off with a screwdriver.
I was hoping you guys could see evidence of welding where it's not supposed to be there.
I banged on it pretty hard.

Re: engine removal stuck at rear subframe
You could get a long pipe or bar and hit it from the other side, as in the last picture. Also try to work the sub frame up and down at the front. Don't bend the studs at the rear. Those sub frames fill with water and don't always drain. Sometimes they rust out.

Re: engine removal stuck at rear subframe
Thanks for the tips.
I gave it a bath with Lime-away and PB blaster.
Then attacked it with a spreader chisel and a stubby sledge hammer.
It was slowly coming apart and I didn't break anything.
I can hear rust moving inside the subframe, so I am wondering how to treat that.
The engine needed some wiggling around to separate from the shaft. I was pretty dry there.
But all in all not a tough job.
I will strap it to the jack, clean it and take the rear cover off to see what's going on there.
Cheers!

Make sure you clean the bottom filter while the engine is out.
The engine goes in a hole lot easer than taking it out.

Re: engine removal stuck at rear subframe
At the very bottom of the engine is a tray that pulls out (take bolts out). There is a screen that needs cleaned. It can not be taken out while engine is in place because of the frame of the bike. It is not a paper filter just a metal screen. I think it is on the right side of the engine.

Nice jack, I have the same one. I had a problem when lowering it would drop very fast. It turned out the u-joint was sloppy. I found a new one on eBay, not oem. It was a better quality and fixed the problem. Search Universal Joint Coupling

Thanks wingingit,
So far so good. This one has a lock that prevents it from coming down.
Only if you lift the lock, it lets down to the next stage.

Warning.
There is a good amount of oil still in there and I didn't have a pan that fits under the jack.
So half a bag of kitty litter.
Found a lot of squishy stuff and a few tiny steel nuggets (lined up in the foreground).

Wow. Good thing that screen was in there, then!
Well...once you have it open, I'm sure the source of that metal will be clear.

The nuggets are not magnetic.
So since I have had the shifting issue I am going to split the block and look at the forks and gears.

You will need 4 hands to put it back together and I use a engine hoist with a good release to lower the the engine cases together.
