rear shocks

Post by Skeldog »

I have put off doing anything about the rear shocks on my 82 GL1100. they have leaked a little oil but hold air fine. however they do bottom out with a bang when I go through a dip fairly fast. that bugs me and probably I should consider rebuilding them -probably low on oil causing the lack of dampening. I would rather just replace with standard shocks and do away with the air. I usually ride alone but I weigh 200# and would like some that would carry me without squatting the bike much. I am long legged and don't need it lowered. I saw some on ebay for about 160$ not sure what quality bu don't really want to piut a whole lot of cash in the old bike. anyway thought I'd ask if that is a bad idea to do away with air suspension

I have a 1981 GL1100 that bottomed out quite often when my wife and I were riding, we go just a bit over the 385# recommended weight limit together. I rebuilt my rear air shocks and it took about 4 hours. It was a LOT less expensive than replacing them and we haven't bottomed out since. We get by with about 40PSI in the shocks. That was 2 years ago and I haven't regretted keeping the air shocks.

I will look into it again. I had searched the info last year but kinda thought it would be a lot simpler to just replace. but if I can find a kit including replacements for the torn boots. I should order it and get to it.

The parts needed are at the end of my video. I have not regretted rebuilding mine and keeping the air.

OK thanks- I like the videos- and want to locate the parts. I don't know there is a reason for me to replace my springs so in theory I guess I would only need the seal kit plus boots. are they available through the website or do I need to call a Honda dealer. thanks again for the help

Boot is part # 52611-463-013 and is still available though several outlets
Seal is part # 91257-463-013 and is also still available
Just google those numbers.

Make sure you get the bumpers. They are almost always just a bunch of goo after 30+ yrs.

If you're pulling them apart, anyways, change the springs. They're not that much money, and if your's are weak, you'll be pretty miffed that you did'nt . I believe you can still get them from Progressive, but I'm sure there are other places, too.
