NGK plug caps for 1981 GL1100

Post by GoldLokiToad »

So I have this used and somewhat abused 1981 GL1100 I'm trying to get in order. When I bought it about 2 years ago is was a good running bike. I needed to do most of that "I bought a new used bike" stuff like checking bearings and brakes etc. plus there was some pretty rinky-dink work done by at least one previous owner. I ran out cash and time before I could sneeze at it. Now with COVID I have more time and a bit of cash. The overhaul, and I say that sort of loosely, has begun. I pulled of spark plug caps a couple of days ago and I read all the info I could read here and else where, and thought I was on the right track. I saw in several places where the NGK caps , XD05FP, are the proffered caps for the gL1100s. However I have found that the NGK web site says they don't fit my 81', and I've done a couple 3-4 checks on store sites with the same result. This afternoon I went out and pulled one of the old caps out of the weather seal to see what it could tell me. They are Nichiwa XD05F s, Im guessing they are probably the originals or a rather old replacement. So I go back to the NGK site and well, it says they don't fit it either. I then entered my bike info into the NGK reference engine and it claims not to have a single cap to fit the 1981 GL1100. So, I bow, with all due respect to the Goldwing'd gods that be and ask WTF (wtfrog) is going on? These Nichiwawas have to go, one is missing at least half of the outer shell at the plug, one is cracked and a 3rd is held together with electrical tape. I am going to be installing NGK Iridiums with 7mm solid wires(or 8mm, if my local shop has it at a decent price) and id like NGK caps to complete that part of the puzzle, but am not sure at this point how I should proceed. Thoughts anyone?

Iridiums are a waste of money, but if it makes your heart sing, have at it.

the OEM plugs will last 100,000 miles
the engine only has 10.5 to 1 compression ratio.

I would get some plug caps off from any parts store that has premade up wires.
they aren't necessary unless you like to ride in rain ?

I don't get this. NGK caps are readily available for gl1000/gl1100. Check eBay. I've bought all of my NGK caps for my bikes from there.
