Rotor compatability

Post by bofler »

I have an '83 Interstate. Wondering if non-Aspencade rotors from other years would be a direct swap.

Specifically:

-Will GL1200 rotors fit on an '83?

-Will earlier GL1100 rotors ('80-'82) fit on an '83?

Can’t answer if 1200s will fit, but they are not the same part as front 83I. I believe any non-Aspencade ‘83 rotor will work.

Are the thicknesses in spec? If so, they might be able to be cleaned up and surfaced.

I haven't done a real life test yet, but I've asked around in a few places and searched around in forums. Seems like Interstate and Standard rotors are likely compatible across the 1100 years where the calipers were dual piston. 1200 rotors seem like they will work as well with an 1100 dual piston year, but maybe only to a certain year of the 1200s. And Aspencades are certainly NOT directly compatible with non-Aspencade setups. That said, you can use an Aspy rotor on a non-Aspy if you grind/file off some of the caliper to fit the larger diameter or use an Aspencade caliper bracket (and probably need to change to different brake pads because the Aspy rotors are thicker).
