No Fan... Help?

Post by ChiefCass59 »

New to me bike. 1982 Gl1100i Interstate. 62K miles and a trailer hitch so I'm going through it step-by-step.
During a test ride, I noticed (among other issues) that the fan wasn't kicking on with gauge well into the red zone.
I pulled the right fairing lower and found what you see in my first pic: the black wire broken off of the thermoswitch plug.
I figured "No problem, I'll just install a manual switch" since I seldom ride traffic jams.
Test of theory - Key on. Tester from battery negative terminal to black wire to check for power: Good, bright light.
Next, Ground black wire with a jumper back to battery negative and NO FAN.
Double-check - put tester on battery end of jumper and Bright Light! Dammit! (Second picture)
I have some big ham hands that won't fit in to get the fan connector disconnected to see if it's corroded but, by diagram, that's "upstream" of my break and I shouldn't get a light if no circuit...
Question - Do I need to pull out or drop the radiator to get at that pesky fan connector?
Question - Should I suspect a burnt out fan motor if I'm still getting a circuit through it?
Question - Does anyone know what I'm missing - probably something pretty obvious...
Thanks everyone in advance.

Sounds like a bad motor.

Grounding the black lead should've made the fan go. Try that again and help the fan blades along by hand to see if it's even trying to spin.

The radiator will need to come out to get to the fan motor.... :(

FYI:

NAPA #235 Thermo fan switch

NAPA #7733 radiator hose If you take radiator off replace the hoses. Get the 1 napa hose and cut it using the old hoses for length. It fits almost exactly.

good Luck

Thanks, folks. Giving the fan a "push" with the broken black wire grounded and key on made it run. No squeak, squeal or any other noise. This makes my repair using a short length of wire soldered in the break (plus an override switch connected to ground) so much simpler! Thanks again!
