Rear tire opinions/suggestions

Post by N2PPN »

Was out riding the "old girl" yesterday down by Jones Beach and on the way home started hearing a "whining" noise from rear tire.... kinda sounded like ring gear noise, but not entirely... decreased with speed and made me concerned.... got off the parkway and visually looked at rear tire, and drive hub... nothing noticeable sprang out at me.... took local streets home at reduced speed and when I arrived home put her up on the center stand for a better inspection.... what I found was what looked like the tip of a knife blade in the rear tire (a Metzler ME 88 Marathon)

..... I plugged the tire and it's not leaking at all now, but I am now faced with buying a new rear tire ASAP due to paranoia and safety concerns....

SOOOOOO, since the ME88 Marathon is no longer produced (like everything else for our old Wings) I'm looking for "hive mind" suggestions for a highway use touring tire (I'm thinking along the lines of Dunlop 404....) to replace it with...

I don't ride as much as I used to, but since the "demic I wanna get out in the fresh air more so I hope to be putting more miles on the "old girl" this year....

Came across a smokin' deal on a Dunlop Elite4 last winter and grabbed it, I'm quite happy with how it rides and handles!

They make E4s to fit an 1100? Thought that wasn't an option.

140/90-16 77h on mine, pretty sure that's what it takes. Keep in mind there's also MU85-16 made by different brands too, that size is often overlooked. I'm running a Shinko 777 up front which is available in that MU85-16 size, I've not run that as a rear on my 'Wing but have had good experiences with that one on other bikes out back.

If the OP's bike is like my '81 interstate it will need a 140/90-17 on the back. The tires to choose from in a 17 is very limited. Went with a Shinko 712 on mine. I had read somewhere (maybe GWD that a 140 will rub on the drive tube) so went with the 130/90-17.

Is a 68H high enough a weight rating to use on that bike?

Yeah, 17" doesn't give you many choices. Had a Suzuki for awhile which I switched to a 16" just so I could find tires, I tend to rack up a lot of miles.

LAB3 I’m pretty sure it was you on the gsresources site that put me onto that Dunlop clearance deal at revzilla...$140 for both front and rear shipped! I will say that mostly any modern tire will be better that anything available in the early ‘80’s, the Shinko units get pretty good reviews and aren’t terribly expensive.

Yep, that was me alright. How does that front tire ride on rain grooves and bridge grates? Anything with a rib running down the center tends to follow them which is a real peeve of mine and the main reason I chose the 777 for up front.

Haven’t had it out on the road yet, my ‘wing is still in pieces. Those tires were actually the first thing i bought for it.

Decided on the Dunlop D404 for the rear.....

130/90 17 68H (the correct size for a 1981 Rear tire)

Best price I could find was on Amazon

ALL the local shops "jacked up" the price anywhere from $30 -$50 above the Amazon price just for the tire alone....

It'll still cost $50 to dismount old/mount new and balance off bike. ($35 to mount, $15 to balance... standard pricing)

Some shops quoted 2 hours or more to change the tire on the bike.... guess they don't do a lot of GW's...

Thanks for all the input, it was appreciated...

Ride safe...
