1981 Goldwing rear tire.

Post by Balsawings »

I have been searching for months for any tire that fits a 1981 Interstate. Now before any one answers, keep in mind that the '81 uses a 140/90-17 tire. The '82 and '83 use a different size tire. The only thing I have been able to find is a Shinko 712.

Has anyone found a different tire that will fit? In my mind I think someone besides Shinko has to make a tire that will work, but I can't find it.

Side note. I will not go to the dark-side. I don't intend to ride these roads in east Tennessee on a car tire. The only thing I will consider is going to a different size wheel in order to use a more common size tire and I really hope I don't have to do that.

Are you sure that’s the right size? I believe it’s 130/90-17.

Sorry about the typing error guys. You are correct. It should be 130/90-17.

The question is still the same. The only tire I can find is the Shinko 712.

I really don't mind running the Shinko 712. I ran them on my SilverWing before going to the Commander II. I would just like to run a better/more durable tire on the GoldWing.

It looks like there might be a few other options:

Thanks Matt.

There were several tires that came up after clicking on the link but most are not available in the correct size. Kinda misleading. There are two that I am considering.

Continental Conti Go Tire $122

and

Bridgestone Battlax BT46 Tire $138

Both tires have the same ratings and pricing will not influence my decision. Not that there's a big difference in the price.

Any suggestions/preference?

I have Dunlop D404's on my '80 1100, the rear is 4 yrs old and I just put a new D404 on the front this past weekend.

I know the wheel sizes changed in years of the 1100, but I thought the '80 and '81 were same. Not selling the rear D404 anymore?

Sorry—I don’t have a suggestion for you. It looks like tire options for 1000/1100s are a lot less than they were a few years ago, especially if you want a matching set. I bought V-rated Shinkos recently, because of their internet reputation of being sticky on the road at the expense of lifespan of the tire. This probably won’t work for those looking to put a lot of miles on a tire.

As an aside, I’m probably one of the few that would like to see old-school white letter tires again, but that’s maybe another discussion.

mind that wheel size are different between Europe and USA model. My 1982 GL1100 has 18/16 wheels size (front/rear) while in Europe it is 19/17

880 METZLER MARATHON MB 8 140/90 - 16 M/C 77 H REINFORCED is what I have on my bike, wire is a bit too large however : a nightmare to remove the rear wheel from the swing arm.

My last bike was a light little Suzuki GS450 that I ran dual sport tires on to get me off the pavement to camp. Realize this is a completely different bike from the Goldwing but this IS about tires. After running Shinko 705's and also a set of Kenda K761's I, tried out the 777 as I never really did need the more aggressive tread in the first place. Found a matching set of Continental Continental Conti Trail 2 that would fit, the Continentals where by far the better road tire than the 777 and about equal off road, the rear lasted about 12k miles, I'd usually get about 7-9 on the other ones I've tried.
