Can someone tell me what this is?
Think I found my leak. There was a garbage homemade looking fiber gasket here. Problem is, I don't know what this is in order to search for a new gasket. Thanks in advance, GWD hive mind!

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
partzilla is my friend, most of the time. Discovered another fun flaw today, there's a decent piece of the cylinder head cover broken off near the front rounded piece. Partzilla shows that those are not available any longer. I found some on ebay, but they don't look the same as the ones I have currently. Were there two different styles of cylinder head cover for the GL1100?

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Yeah, valve cover. I've seen the same thing referred to as both. Though I was looking through some pictures trying to figure it out, and the valve covers on my bike look to be the same ones from the GL1000. Do you know if that was basically the same engine? Or maybe someone at some point put a different motor in it? How would I tell the difference?

The missing cover is the timing belt cover for the right side. The timing belt cover gasket P/N for the right side is 11831-371-010. The valve cover gasket P/N is 12328-371-000

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Yeah I have the timing belt covers and gaskets. The question is that valve cover looks like it's from a GL1000, my bike is supposedly a GL1100. Are those valve covers interchangeable?

I don’t believe that is from a 1000, but an aftermarket 1100 chrome cover.

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
That's not a GL1000 valve cover. It's an aftermarket valve cover made for the GL1100. Originally they said "GOLDWING" on them, which is the dead giveaway, because Honda always has a space in there. If it was OEM, it would say "GOLD WING" not "GOLDWING".

Thanks for posting this, i have the same on my `82. I`m not fond of them, they leak constantly even with new seals. If a reader has a set of original Honda covers, feel free to contact me.

I just found a set on ebay for $40. Looked like there were a few sets around that price.82Standard wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 10:37 am Thanks for posting this, i have the same on my `82. Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Okay. New development. I'm fresh out of ideas at this point. New (to me) valve covers, off a stock 82. New gaskets. New final gear gasket. Fresh oil change. Took her for a spin around the neighborhood and my shoe is still wet. Left side is fine. Right side still leaks. Not gushing, but definitely splattering. What's the round piece off the back side of that part of the engine? Could it be coming from there?
Oh, and fun side note: somehow I developed a backfire.

Are you talking about the fuel pump?
The wind from riding makes it hard to say where it's coming from. How about just running the engine stationary on the center stand, and then it might be more clear where the leak originates.

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Alright, did that, and found that the leak is coming from the insulator between the fuel pump and the engine. Really tough to find though, only found it at one website. It's supposed to be hard plastic yeah? Is there any disadvantage to helping make that seal with some RTV Black?

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
I believe those insulators had very thin paper gaskets on each face. Either make some new gaskets or use some sealer very sparingly would be ok. But first I would remove any old gasket and take some 400 grit wet dry sandpaper on a piece of plate glass and wet lap the insulators flat.
I just looked and amazingly one of them is still available from Honda.

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
And the saga continues... new insulator fits great, got the junk cleaned off from the old one and as I'm putting in the inner bolt, it starts to tighten, then gives way. pull the bolt out, find this. Would Heli-coil work here?

Hard to tell - is that a thread peeled off from the inside, or has it already been helicoiled, and it just backed out? I'm suspecting it is the latter...

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Looks Helicoily to me too. Threads don't pull like that. They come out at the major diameter and flat sided.
On the plus side there may still be more heli-coil down there. Might still be usable.
Generally what happens is somebody drills and hand taps the the hole and wobbles at the top of it with the drill or tap. The heli-coil does not get as much surface to grip at the beginning of the hole due to increase in diameter or taper at the top of it. I have a hunch the helicoiling wasn't done first class. They can be tricky at times.

Checks the metal that came out. The helicoil will not be aluminum.

Re: Can someone tell me what this is?
Thanks y'all. I ended up using a helicoil and it drilled out/threaded in perfectly. No leaks now!! Got everything squared away and she's purring like a kitten!
