Bike won't start

Post by Salamander224 »

I just bought a 1981 gl1100. I road it home 54 miles, and ran good. Ran it enough to tune the idle and now it won't start. I've charged and gotten a new battery and starter solenoid, and it roles over just fine until the battery dies. I also had to replace the positive battery cable too. I checked for spark and all plugs definitely have it. The only thing I can think of is the fuel pump but I dont know how to check that. I would definitely appreciate any and all help

If you have spark, you might try starting fluid down the plenum. If it fires up, you likely will need to troubleshoot a fuel issue.

The quickest way would be to pull the fuel line off where it goes into the carbs then crank the engine, have a container handy to catch the gas as it comes out. Don't forget to check and see if the fuel filter is clogged and the fuel is coming out of the petcock as well.
I'm selling good clean fresh hay. If you want some that's already passed through the horse, that comes a little cheaper!

The best advice on internet motorcycle repair forums comes from posting the wrong answer to your own question.

I ended up putting a new fuel pump in, but it still won't start, would a faulty kik switch allow it to turn over and not take off?

You mentioned you had spark. The kill switch in the off position disables spark at the plugs.
