GL1100 main fuse is still available from Honda

Post by boblepp »

I see some riders think the original dog bone main fuse is not available.

I just bought 3, and the dealer had to order ten. CAD $1.43. Honda Canada supplied them.

I only ever blew it once with no idea why.

I would rank this as a “mandatory spare” since it’s so inexpensive.

There should be a spare clipped into the fuse cover.

I’m not sure if you meant:
You will find one from the factory…or
The factory should one day provide one…
There was none under my cover, nor any sign of clips to hold one
So, now there IS one! 3 actually, and I pray they go into the crusher decades from now.

some models the spare dog bone fuse is in the cover , mine an 83 the spare fuse is right above the working fuse there is a slot in the rubber for the spare fuse, if you did not know it was there you probably would not see it

Problem is...they're still delicate and susceptible to heat embrittlement, and not the greatest design. Plus when they DO fail, if you don't have an on-hand spare (or the screwdriver to replace it), you're out of luck. That's why many of us replaced them with standard auto fuse holders, so we can quickly replace them with fuses found at any gas station, without any tools.

if you DO have the factory spare under the cover, check the structural integrity of it. when i bought my first gl1100 i had no idea what a dogbone fuse was. when i touched it with my finger it crumbled to a fine powder. it would not have made a good spare. ;)

I have not learned anything new about my bike in 40 years since I bought it, but NOW!

There IS a spare fuse, not under tanktop MAIN fuse cover, but under the MAIN FUSE cover. One COULD not know it was there and no one reads manuals.

Thanks to all of you and your patience. In retrospect, I should have KNOWN Honda would put a spare somewhere. What will I learn in the NEXT 40 years? 😎

Now you've inspired me to put together my video on how to replace the neutral switch in under 3 days with only the tools one would have as a tool and die maker who also builds hardwood cabinetry! Working title: Replacing GL1100 neutral switch while maintaining good relations with a Japanese mother-in-law.

I was going to add this post, but I see I was beat to it.

This fuse is in a cardboard holder with a clear plastic over-shell.
I think it even had "Honda" on the label IIRC ??
