my problem is that i have very low sound coming out of the speakers unless i use the positive from the right side, and the negative from the left side. that is the only way i get any decent volume from a speaker. tested the system with a known good speaker hooked up both correctly, and using one wire from each side. does this mean that the audio system amplifier has gone bad? if soo, can i use a small aftermarket amplifier to replace the stock amplifier? tia for any advice.

Sounds like the right side neg and left side pos amplifiers have failed. These amplifiers are usually two-to-a-chip, both the pos and neg amplifiers within the same chip for that channel, so will need to replace both chips to get it working right. These chips aren't very expensive.
