I screwed up...i think

Post by Bhink1100 »

First and foremost...hello and thanks in advance for any help...at all. I just bought a 1982 gl1100i. I have a 1981 which I refer to as old reliable. but I bought the '82 on an impulse and now may be regretting it. It runs good but the pipes are obnoxious. What concerns me is the steering. When I turn between 5mph and 45 the handle bars want to pull and want to turn in that direction. My '81 doesn't pull... I have to turn the handle bars. The '82 pulls hard in that direction. Any thoughts or do I need more clarification?

Generally that's going to be down to tires. What are the condition of the tires? What are they inflated to?

Thanks for the reply! The front looks...fair at best, but old. Psi 30.
Rear is almost bald and at 20psi. Would that be some of the reason?

Next thing I'd be looking at is the steering stem bearings, they tend to dig little "ruts" into the bearing race as they wear and get looser. Had a bike that did something very similar sounding to what you're experiencing and sure enough that was it.

Thanks, man! I'll be looking at that next. 👍 I have regret buying it since I did it, BUT, today stripped it so I'll make a naked gl1100. I have an 89 1500 and an 81 1100. Why not have a naked one too. 🤣🤣🤣. Ill need to find headlight brackets, turn signals and a bucket and I'll be good to go.

Mine has a light bar/headlight combo, easy enough to find on eBay and it does what I need it to do.

Low tire pressure especially the 20 lbs in the rear will definitely cause your problem. Not only that but it is dangerous to be riding on 20 lbs.

Does it have a fork brace?

And easy way to check (roughly) for the bearings is to jack up the bike with the tire off the ground then gently turn the handlebars back and forth.....it should smoothly swing from side to side. If there's a place where it hangs up or feels like it wants to settle then you've probably got bad bearings. It should smoothly swing all the way back and forth with no resistance.

I'm working on a naked GL1100 too (1982). A work in progress but I've gotten tons of help from experts here. This is the first bike I've really "gotten under the hood" on. Enjoy!

Check your fork brace if you have one. Mine had two loose screws when I went to remove it. A lot of knocking and noise when braking and cornering.

This is all very useful info. I have an '89 and now my two 1100s. I appreciate all the help. The video was super helpful. I had to leave on a trip but will do this when I get home and post my results. Goldwingdocs is a great place. Like minded people helping each other. I am genuinely grateful for all the input.

This happened to me on an old H-D FLH. Low speed wobble, and almost felt like front-end locked during low speed turns. The steering head bearings had become indexed. New bearings and it was good as new.
