GL 1100 Led Head Light

Post by rfriedersdorf »

I have a 1981 GL 1100 with a vetter fairing. Can a Led Headlight be installed in the fairing in place of the old head light?
Thanks.

you can either buy an led headlight bulb and replace the halogen bulb, or buy a full led assembly like what is offered for jeeps and replace the full assembly. if the flutes in your housing assembly are in good shape, i reccomend buying a quality led bulb to replace the factory halogen. if the flutes are damaged, i recommend buying a full led assembly to replace the bulb housing.

all that being said, ive never dealt with a vetter fairing. i would assume that a bulb is a bulb, and an assembly is an assembly.

what size is the assembly housing? what mount style does it use? can you remove the assembly fairly easily? having no experience with the vetter fairing, i have some questions.

Vetter fairing uses a standard large-size round automotive sealed-beam bulb like you'd find in a '60s or '70s car or pickup with only two headlights. Don't know if any LED equivalents exist.

Looks like it might. The 6024 number for the sealed beam bulb seems correct, but would want to confirm it.

Edit: Just happen to have a bulb in the garage on the shelf, it IS a 6024, so this should work nicely.

I replaced the headlight in my 83 interstate with a KC Hilites model that is a rebranded Peterson 701C Great White (which I put in my other bike).
They make a very good wide pattern for night riding as well as day time visibility. Also it is only 25W, so the load on the alternator is lower than the halogen. You’ll find it on eBay and other online sellers.

I just installed this light. I needed to cut some notches into the mounting ring to accommodate the alignment notches.
