1982 GL1100 Barn Find rebuild

Post by gdhubert »

Hello everyone. Got this 1982 GL1100 about a month ago. I have been working on it for the past month or so. Picked it up from someone that just wanted to get rid of it. It hasn't been on the road for about two years but has been stored inside a barn. Starts right up and idles nicely. Needs a bunch of TLC. I started by cleaning it up and after stripping off the fairings and bags. Found the brakes to be in really bad shape. Just finished rebuilding front and rear calipers and got the rotors redone by TrueDisk LLC in Michigan. Tom at TrueDisk did a GREAT job. I am starting to reassemble and continue cleaning. Still need to synch the carbs and do an oil and coolant flush and change. Just thought you'all would be interested. I attached a few pics of the process.

Thanks for looking.

Check out the caliper sliders - make sure they are well lubricated and free of corrosion, and that the rubber boots are in good shape. Binding/sticking sliders are the #1 cause of uneven pad wear on these bikes.

Absolutely, made sure to be very generous with the high-temp brake grease on the sliders. I replaced all the seals with new ones. Your tutorial in the How-To articles was great! In fact all of the How-To's are great. Have things back together now on the front and back wheels thanks to your help. Thank you!
