1983 GL1100 Engine Now Opened it up today
1983 GL1100 Engine Now Opened it up today
For those who were following my initial thread on 'have you seen an engine worse' I have now opened her up today with the assistance of my Dad, it was a B@$tard of a time separating a crankcase that has been together for 39 years! Anyway as you can see in the photos below I was pleasantly surprised at the state. Only really light surface rust and some thick tar like oil that I should be able to remove. The gearbox looks in great condition as a 32,000 mile engine should do. I will strip everything out of the cases tomorrow and start the clean up, I can also get the cases vapour blasted by a friend and I will respray them. I reckon for a few hundred Dollars I will have a sweet engine that I know is good. The primary chain looks spot on also and he internals are not the horror story I was expecting but it needed splitting. As my dad taught me many years ago, if a job is worth doing its worth doing right!

Looks good! Very minor wear on a few of the shifter dogs, but nothing I would even think twice about. Everything else looks great!
