83 gl1100 interstate front calipers

Post by danmercer214 »

Hi,
With my bike I have two different sized calipers. One side is large pistons and the the other smaller pistons. I can’t seem to find the proper rebuild kit for both sides. Seems the ones I order are just a bit bigger in diameter. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Take care,
Dan

Just in case you haven't found the answer elsewhere, it appears that you have the combined brake system that was installed on some later models. The front right caliper is linked to the rear and operated by the footbrake. I bought replacement parts through Davidsilver (I am in UK). I gave the frame number and he supplied the correct parts. Any Honda spares people should be able to give you the right bits.
A bit of advice when doing the replacement of the caliper seals - clean the grooves of the pistons very carefully. If any muck is left in there when you slip on the new seals, you will never get the pistons back into their bores.

The '83 has linked brakes and the front-right has smaller pistons than the front-left. The front-right caliper should have (25) stamped on it, and the front-left should have (32) stamped on it. Those numbers are the approximate piston sizes. I mention the numbers because you should check. My bike is also an '83, but a previous owner swapped out the front-left for an '82 caliper, which has smaller pistons. Glad I caught that before I ordered rebuild parts. You could try the kits from Brakecrafters. I've used their stuff and its high quality. Cyclemax has a good selection of K&L kits, so that could be another option.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I found all the right parts thru brakecrafters.com. They really helped me out and found the right parts. All rebuilt and bought the pneumatic brake bleeder from harbor freight and all new fluid and good solid brakes now. She’s a great riding bike. Fun to ride. Need to put a few miles on it to get the carbs completely flushed. Just idling a bit rough but runs great other than that. Thanks again for the info. Take care,
Dan
