Powder coating rims
Has anyone powder coated the rims on an 1983 gl1100 and left the rubber inserts in the rear rims? Or how do you get those out?

Re: Powder coating rims
after the "powder" is aplied, the coated parts are cooked in an oven. hope that answers your question.

Re: Powder coating rims
I guess my post wasn't worded very well. I am preping my rims to be powder coated and I am wondering if the rubber inserts come out of the rear rim or not. I have not found replacements online and even the parts fiches I have seen don't show them as separate items. Would they be destroyed if I left them in when baking the powder coat?

Re: Powder coating rims
yes, they would be destroyed. but most coaters will not allow foreign material(s) into their ovens. you would also want to remove all old grease, any bearing seats, etc. place a washer over the hole for the valve stem, and hold it in place with a screw and nut. it keeps the poweder from being applied to the seating area of the valve. tape the insides of the rim where the tire seats. put screws in the holes you take screws out of, if you have spokes, remove them. yada yada
you may want to get some recommends and look at previous work, see some wheels that have been coated and have some miles on them after a couple tire changes.
good luck!

Okay, does anyone know how to remove the rubber inserts in the rear rim that holds the hub in place? Or does anyone have replacement options for those rubber inserts?

Check with your powder coating place for other options like UV cure and ultra-low cure.
