83 GL1100I Initial Carb Set Up After Rebuild

Post by Rustle »

Howdy, Howdy.

I'm rebuilding the carbs on my GL1100 and I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a resource for the initial settings? I've read through a lot but still could use some advice on firing the bike the first time. I'm going to synch once complete.

Prior to pulling the carbs I filled a funnel with fuel and ran a line to the fuel pump and I could get the bike running with starter fluid with a little throttle, but could not get it to idle. Which is why I pulled them to rebuild. Now I could just use a couple pointers on where to start after I get them rebuilt.

Also just wanted to thank everyone on this forum. I've tinkered with a lot of different projects over the years and this forum seems to have the most in depth information and helpful people that actually reply to threads.

for the pilot screws/idle mixture screws, i think the initial setting is 2 1/2 turns out. someone can correct me if i am wrong but 2 1/2 will be a good place to start.

always bench test carbs before re-installing them : hang a fuel container 2 or 3 feet above them (more is better) and fill the carbs from it; they should not leak anywhere. test that the accelerator pump nozzles are all spraying fuel. bench sync them by eye ... you want to see the throttle butterflies all closing the same amount.

Thank you for the input. I will start there.

Does anyone know if the carb rebuild kit for the 80-82 GL1100 is the same as the 83? On Part-n-More the website description says 80-83, but when I got the kits the box says 80-82.

Is your gas tank rusty inside - if so clean that too!.

On the 1980 model the midrange jet is not removable but is on the 82 and 83.

Most of the time the carbs are just dirty and need a good cleaning.

Float bowl gaskets are all the same for the years.

You will want to be sure the air cut off valves are all in good shape along with the one accelerator pump.
