coolant bottle

Post by Zappawing »

Does anyone know if the coolant level on an ancient wing (1982) GL1100 should be checked with bike on side stand OR on the centre stand? nothing in the owner's manual in relation to this OR in the service manual.

It makes a difference when I checked on the centre stand it was below "Low" mark but on the side stand it reads between low and high..........I am checking via a cold engine with bike not ridden for a few days

thanks (PS- any pre mixed 50-50 coolant will do??)

going out for a ride........as soon as I can shovel the snow out of my driveway.....alas...weather in the Canadian Rockies

I'd recommend that you check it like you check your oil, on the center stand.

I would not recommend just any antifreeze. Honda 50/50 premix for motorcycle or four wheeler is what I use.

Coolant level is not terribly critical... you don't want it to go empty, and you need a little headroom for a hot engine to push some fluid up there. So a level anywhere near the middle is good. I know the early 1100's are a bear to get up on the center stand (mine certainly is) so I only do that for oil changes, long term storage, etc. You can see the overflow bottle just sitting on the machine, holding it vertical, if you lift the hatch. You need silicate-free antifreeze. Many brands are, I use Walmart's.

Amen on the northern tier weather. Got my Wing out Saturday for 1st ride of the season. A balmy 42 degrees here in Minnesota.

my first was a 1966 dream 150! man was it smooth. and the seat was more comfortable than my goldwing.
