sidewall neatly gouged

Post by winguyjo »

next up on the operating table is my 1981 gl1100 interstate.

during an initial overall health assessment i found this ....

the gouge is so neat and clean that it took me a while to notice it. i got the bike with the side bag and rear caliper removed but there is no way that they caused this anyhow. all i can think is that something (road debris) got caught between the brake stay bracket (shown in 2nd pic) and the tire ? the rider may, or may not have heard/felt it but it looks like he/she was possibly only a minute, maybe less, from a potentially really bad day. any ideas as to what may have caused this other than what i have already guessed ?

it's a 130/90/17 which is the stock size for '81.

Similiar thing happened to me years ago on my 1200.
Took a wrong turn and ended up in some mud!
Got it out but what mess! 150 mile ride home from there, dark but divided highway just followed a semi.
Had a whitewall on one side of the front tire. Mud musta jammed a rock in the fender and bike had so much extra weight didnt notice.
Enjoying the Darkside

that's what i am thinking ... something from the road got jammed in between the brake stay and the tire. if that's the case, when i get deeper into it i should see some marks on the inside of that brake stay. at any rate, there is absolutely nothing currently on the bike that could have done it.

I agree, and the fact that they are perfectly lined up with the deep sipes in the tire, makes me think those sipes grabbed the object as they passed by and caused the damage. Strange!
