took my latest resurrection, a 1981 gl1100 interstate, out for it's first real road test; previous road tests had been "just around the block". needs a few issues to be addressed but the one that has me a bit puzzled is this ... if i bring the speed up to around 80mph or more, then instantly release the throttle, after 3 seconds there will be a single, loud 'pop' from the exhaust. it doesn't ALWAYS do it, but it USUALLY does, and when it does there's always a 3 second lag, and there's always just one 'pop'. at first i thought it was only coming from the right exhaust but i am pretty sure the last one came out the left.
i welcome your thoughts on this.
single loud POP on deceleration.

I believe there is a secondary air system to prevent that. I suspect yours isn't working. Search for air cutoff valve for more info.

If the 1100 setup is the same as the 1000, you can access the air cutoff valve without removing the carbs. Pull the air filter box and you can get straight on it. Of course, if the 1100's are different, I've been no help at all!

thanks, maz. the 1100 is different, unless i am mistaken, each carb has it's own ACV and if i recall correctly, 2 of them can only be accessed by removing and splitting the carbs.

I changed my air cut off valves with the Carbs on the bike. I used a small flat ratchet that is made for bits . I got the kit at Loews , 83 GL 1100
