Rear Turn Signal mount, gl1100 “standard”

Post by Chivol »

Hi, 81 Gl1100. I removed all of the bikes fairings and bags, but left the upper rack. Drilled out one of the remaining tabs and mounted new after market turn signals front and back. All good. But I purchased a new grab bar from gl1100 standard and now there is nowhere to mount the turn signals. Thought of mounting stalks on the rear tail light casing, but not sure that is a good option. Any suggestions? Great forum

As a guide, this is how they did it on the 'naked' Wings.

Just a mounting bar secured through the real number plate/light housing.

In 2010 I took off all the rear Vetter gear and replaced with aftermarket saddlebag cage, frame, bags, lights and the main reason a trailer hitch. And then adapted the Vetter trunk to fit.
Problem was, when I went to put this all together, I couldn't use the tail light assembly from the STD because it had stalks sticking out for mounting the turn signals. These interfered with the saddlebags on the aftermarket setup, and the aftermarket rig already had ears for mounting the turn signal lights, so I got a tail light from a junked 1200 without the turn signal stalks and all was happy.

We made several cross-country trips with the 1100 and the camper.

Five years ago I bought the 1500, and I decided I wanted to put the 1100 back to just Vetter without the trailer hitch. Evidently I tossed the 1100 STD tail light frame and had nowhere to mount turn signals.

My fix was to buy a piece of iron bar stock from Home Depot, attach it to the 1200 Taillight with a bolt as you see in photo, and grind each end of the bar stock until the turn signals fit on it perfectly. Drill a thru-hole on the ends for the attaching screws.
