81 Interstate rpm's too high?

Post by wrecktim hell »

I have a new to me 81 Interstate with about 47,000 on it. It seems to be in pretty decent shape for a bike this old and starts easier than any bike I have owned. My other GW was a 91 and it didn't seem to be as low geared as this one though it really didn't have tall gears either. This one runs about 4000 rpm at 60 and gets to winding pretty high past that. Is this normal, and something I should just get used to? Is cruising at 75 for hours on end more than I can expect out of this bike?
Hoping someone familiar with this bike can clue me in and thanks in advance.
Doug

That sounds like the same as my 80 model, I think the gearing changed in 82 on. I wish there was a way to change it like changing a sprocket but it is all internal, highway speeds were slower back when the bike was built.
They will go the higher RPM`s for quit some time, I rode mine all over at 65-70 but I would need to rest my hands allot with vibrations, so yea .. I would ride it how you want..

My '80 revs 5000 rpm at 75mph, it is normal for this bike, and the bike will happily do 80-85mph on the freeway all day. The 4cyl Wing engines are designed to run high revs, much more than the 6cyl 'Wings. You are nowhere near red line.

Don't worry about the RPM and drive it like you stole it!

Just finished reading a few threads here from people asking about this. It seems it is what it is and I need to get used to it turning that fast and it's not really a problem.
