'82 GL1100 - Comparing rear master cylinder rebuild kits

Post by crazzy450z »

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could chime in on the quality of the different rear brake master cylinder kits currently available.
Being in Canada our costs are slightly different, or I have to ship from the US and pay all the duties and government crap.
  • K&L Supply 32-4271 (CAN $96.99) Out of stock locally
  • Parts Unlimited 1731-0527 (CAN $38.99) in stock locally
  • brakecrafters.com (USD $51.35 with Ship + duty)
  • All Balls does not list a rear rebuild kit.
If there are other kits I have not listed, please let me know so I can consider them as well.

So I guess my question is, has anyone used the parts unlimited rebuild kit? How was its quality of components? The Parts Unlimited web site says their kits are manufactured by Nissin. Its cost is significantly less then the K&L kit locally, and is listed as in stock.\

Thanks..

I cannot speak to the quality of the master cylinder rebuild kits as of yet, but I have ordered brake caliper rebuild kits from brakecrafters.com and I have been extremely impressed with the quality of their parts, as well as the speed of shipping. Now, being in Canada, it might take a bit longer to get to you, but I’d still bet on them being the fastest. I ordered two separate items from them, one I ordered Thursday night and one I ordered late Friday night, and I had them both by Monday. Based on the quality of their caliper rebuild kits, I have no reason to think the master cylinder kits will be of poor quality and I will be ordering one tomorrow evening.

K&L has been my brand for many years, The parts unlimited I have never used , I try to be sure they are made in Japan and many sell K&L under their own name, I have heard good feedback on brakecrafters and would trust their parts
I like to use georgefix on ebay, here is a link to a rear 83 kit for 39.65 and he does do international shipping

I have an 83 my rear master kept leaking. I thought the master was shot then I got curious about the kits and the range of prices and I found out the cheaper kits are made in china and they do not care about OEM specs the better and more pricy kits are made in Japan to OEM specs. I got a better kit and my master has been good no leaks for 4 years

Thanks everyone.. I used brakecrafters.com last year for some parts for masters cylinders and calipers. Yes their kits seem to be good quality. It just took well over 3 weeks for the shipment to get here. The delivery from their warehouse to the Canada border was slow, then it sat at the border for clearance for over a week. The shipment from the border clearance to my place was only something like 2 days..

This was why I was hoping to find something local. We don't have a lot of parts distributors up here so our choices are limited.. The major ones are RoyalDistributing.com and FortNine.com. RoyalDistributing does not list a rebuild kit for a '82. Fortnine carries the K&L but is out of stock. They also carry the Parts Unlimited unit. This is in stock. But the cost is 1/3 the K&L unit. This is what prompted my question. Why the hell is that kit so much cheaper ($39 vs $96). LOL.. Or is the K&L just inflated in cost up here?

Some of it is that the Canadian dollar is worth 77 cents to the US dollar, the rest may be import duties and or taxes passed on to consumers, why not just try the parts unlimited, either it works fine, works for a limited time or doesn't work at all, my guess it will work fine and if it doesn't pull the other handle :P .
