I have an '82 Gl1100I and removed the trunk box and side boxes. They had been damaged by a previous owner and looked like hell. But my wife misses the passenger backrest.
Would a GL1000 backrest fit?

I can not tell you if it would fit. However, I would look for a GL1100 standard luggage rack and back rest. That may be easier to install and less work to get to look good and still be comfy for her. Just my opinion.
