starter magnets

Post by winguyjo »

gl1100 starter ... this is my 3rd time pulling it to deal with poor starter performance. never thought to check the magnets the first 2 times.

the magnets wont even hold that tiny screw sitting in front of the starter body. it's a wonder to me that this starter spun the engine as well as it did (most of the time). considering their size, shouldn't the magnets have a nice, strong pull ? can this starter be saved ?

Pretty sure they are electromagnet starters not permanent magnet so there would not be magnetized till there is power at the starter. Here is a nice tutorial on the starter rebuild.
