coolant by-pass???

coolant by-pass???
the 1100 has a coolant port that the 1200 doesnt, is that port just for a by-pass till the thermostat opens?? is it needed seeing the 1200 doesnt have it. i would like to use the 1200 thermostat housing to connect a hose for my heated intake.could i put a o-ring in the port in the block and use the 1200 thermostat housing
