Washer 15414-300-000 $3.78
Spring 15415-300-000 $4.27

Both parts still good at Honda or other OEM distributor like Partzilla.com

It definitely is a problem. That spring is what allows the filter to go into bypass mode when the oil pressure gets too high, for whatever reason (but usually due to cold, thick oil). When the pressure goes down, that spring pushes the filter back into place.

Without the spring, your filter is permanently in bypass mode....which means NO filtering of your oil is happening.

How does not having the spring put the system into bypass mode ?

Without the spring there is nothing to hold the filter up to the sealing surface of the oil port.

Doesn't the ID of the rubber rings in the oil filter seal on the OD of the center bolt ?

I was thinking that too. It's been a while since I had one of those apart. I remember there are some holes in the bolt that might be uncovered if the element slides back, I'm sure if you have it apart in front of you, it will be clear just how it works. I seem to recall that some of the bolts also have an anti drain back valve inside them? Or I could be thinking of something else. Way to many oil services on way too many engines.
