Shift drum stopper assembly

Post by jasowiii »

I am putting together an '83 1100 and I am stumped by the shift drum "stoppers".
The parts manual and several websites show then assembled as in the attached graphic.

If put them in the order shown they simply don't line up. It is pretty clear that #9 rides on #10 (1 detent for each gear) and #14 rides on #5 and only drops into ("stops") on the neutral detent.

In order to get it together I had to swap items 9 and 14.
With #5 going on the drum before #10 it make sense that #14 would be installed (on the stud) before #9. To me anyway.

Once I assembled it "my" way it goes together like peas and carrots and shifts like butter!

Am I missing something? Has anyone ever found the parts diagrams to be in error?

Just an update.
I found a couple other images of assembled shift drum stoppers on '83 machines where they are assembled the way I did it. I am confident that the parts manual depiction is incorrect as far as the order of assembly for my model year.
