Shim dampening

I removed my front brake disk and there was a gasket between the disk and the rim looked it up on OEM site it is no longer available but was called shim dampening so I am asking is it necessary .what does it do and would one made out gasket material do the job 83 interstate

I would just leave it off, your talking about a thin paper gasket right? I have seen them with and without and working fine but you can make one using thin gasket material, not sure I would trust gasket material in a volatile place as a disc meets wheel though. safer bet is to leave off.

I am currently working on an 83 and ordered new shim dampers online. I had my rims powder coated and without the shim damper the brake caliper mounting bracket would rub ever so slightly against the disk. I added the shim damper and the rubbing went away. Not sure what else you could use but probably worth it to put it in.
