poor power and backfiring

Post by Brads Brown wing »

Hello folks, I had the opportunity to buy my old bike back after 3 years, It didn`t start so I benched it and started looking, It was outside for a cpl. years under a tarp, so first off brought it in the shop to dry out. It would barely idle with the choke out but wouldn`t run and would pop and backfire, so first off I took out the carbs for a cleaning, Found lots of gunk so I used a guitar string and cleaned the jets and put it together, first time but it seemed to go well. Since I was in there I ordered a cpl. coils and new wires with throttle cables, got it together and much to my surprise after a few cranks started right up. Problem now is a lack of smooth throttle operation and still backfiring, so I`m in the process of checking the valve clearance, ran into an issue with the oil plug, they stripped it and now I need to touch that up before firing. Any other ideas as to why it would start perfect but run poorly?

Check the igniters under the tank, you will have to remove the tank to see them on the left side 2 of them, usually they lose their potting from getting hot, doesn't necessarily mean they are bad but worth looking at , should be a testing procedure in the manual or here on the forums how to.
Check for chaffed or shorted wires as well.

Thanks, I`m a little lost as to igniters, I did the coils , spark plug wires and set the valves, seems to be running fairly well ,but theres a few holes in the exhaust that need some attention, so I`ll get to them, right now I`ve got brake issues, lol. Guess when it sits outside for a cpl.4 years under a tarp they don`t fair well
