1983 GL1100I not idling

Post by hjain »

I bought a bike that was sitting for 10 years. Rebuild the carbs, replaced throttle cables, clutch cable, painted, oil changed and a lot of other work done.
The bike cranks but dies on idling. If I increase the throttle it is fine and the moment I let my throttle go it dies.
Tried syncing the carbs and it seems fine. Need some suggestions before I pull out the carbs again to check them.

You can't sync the carbs if it won't idle. Raise the idle speed enough to do the sync, then you should be able to turn it down to spec and fine tune your sync.

Are you saying to raise the idle speed using the pilot screw?
I tried syncing the carbs by increasing my throttle to around 2500 RPM.

Not the pilot screws, the throttle stop screw. Raise it just enough to keep running, then do your sync and that will probably raise the idle speed quite a bit. Then turn down the idle and check the sync again. Repeat until you have equal vacuum readings and a 1000 rpm idle.

I used the kit from Randakks.
Be whatever the position of the throttle stop screw I was not able to get it to idle. Tried with screw position at extreme ends. Also the above sync which I did was by holding the throttle such that the RPM was around 2500

That sounds like plugged idle jets to me.

Carbs will have come out again, and the low speed jets removed.

On the '83 I think you can simply unscrew them from the carb body, earlier years of 1100 they are pressed into the carbs but still can be removed for cleaning.

The jets have numerous little holes on the sides, and a tiny orifice hole thru the center. Need to find a very thin wire to poke thru the orifice without damaging it. All passages need to be clear....

Like denverwinger said, also look for vacuum leaks at the manifolds.

@DenverWinger - you were correct, the idle jets needed to be cleaned. Those were clogged.
This was the first time I rebuild a Carb :)
Finally I have the bike idling fine......There is still some issue with throttle getting stuck. I will upload a video about the same soon.
Thanks a ton guys.
