Re: Starting with clutch in
Most likely you have a failed starter clutch diode. If your neutral light is also not working, then it could be your neutral switch, but the most common failure is that diode.Bombasstic wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 7:58 am My GL1100 won't start unless I have pulled the clutch in. Re: Starting with clutch in
I feel a bit of a Plonker . . . I can't locate the diodes? And I also need to locate the 7v regulator as I've also got a Fuel and Temp guage problem. I can strip and assemble a motor and carb etc. but when it comes to electrics I am lost.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Starting with clutch in
It is on the left side of the frame, underneath the false tank, near the turn signal flasher. A small black box with a diode symbol on the top plugged into the wiring harness.
The 7v regulator is under the gauges behind a cover. If you buy the replacement from WingAdmin it comes with good instructions.

Re: Starting with clutch in
I have taken off the instrument panel, guages and everything I can . . . and still no 7 volt regulator to be found. Could it be that instead of being faulty, it simply wasn't installed?
And could the same be true for the Starter Clutch Diode which I can't find either. Would that result in the condition I have where I need to pull in the clutch to start the bike - even in neutral?

Re: Starting with clutch in
Take the cover off the back of the gauge cluster. The regulator should be under there.

Which type of 1100 do you have?Bombasstic wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:55 am I have taken off the instrument panel, guages and everything I can . . . and still no 7 volt regulator to be found. Could it be that instead of being faulty, it simply wasn't installed?

Re: Starting with clutch in
I am not 100% sure of the year 1981 / 1982 GL 1100 Goldwing Interstate
I have finally found the 7v regulator (still to be tested)
As for the Clutch Starter Diode ?
All I find on the left is as follows ;-
CDI Unit Oki MPS-200 Ignition Control x2
ET-63 - 1.3
Turn signal relay
Nothing with a Diode sign.

Re: Starting with clutch in
Instead of looking for the black diode, look for the white terminal as shown in the photo above. My Aspencade diode was inside the frame, behind the upright frame member. I could only get to it by taking all the mounted electrics off the outside of the frame and using a long screwdriver to lift the tight wire harness up to access the diode. My Aspencade seems to be wired differently from your interstate. But now others may find an answer to their Aspencade. Cheers.
