The timeless question regarding old GoldWings. Have the timing belts been replaced? If so, when? A question that we all should ask. I asked the question and decided to just do it. I got the belts at the local NAPA store. Proceeded to start the job. Was able to remove the timing belt cover without taking off the radiator. Not easy but doable. I got the funky little tool that Saber Cycles sells for removing the 10mm bolts. Well worth the $12 for the tool. When I got the covers off it was obvious that at sometime, someone had changed the timing belts. When? Mileage? nobody knows. I could tell they were changed because there was copious amounts of red RTV used to secure the gasket/seal for the timing belt covers. I was able to remove the old belts and install the new ones without too much of a problem. Yeah, I did scrape my knuckles a bit. Wear gloves next time.
I feel better now that I know the history/condition of my timing belts. Well worth the time and effort I would say. I would recommend replacing them if you don't know the history/age of your timing belts. It's not that hard. There are videos all over YouTube showing how its done. Couple of hours of work. $30 in parts (belts) and I have set my mind at ease regarding this important component of the GL1100.
GL1100 Timing Belts - Wuz it or Wuzn't they replaced?
Re: GL1100 Timing Belts - Wuz it or Wuzn't they replaced?
How were the ideler pullys? Had reciept for new belts on mine. 2 years 3 tho miles. Had squecking from belt area. One pully had been sliding on one belt. Another hour work and think 50 dollars had new toyota wheels on it.
There is a utbe on doing that with the napa part number for wheels. I found 1/2 drill got old wheels off. Then a bolt and tack weld.

Idler pulleys were okay. Cleaned them up a bit. Bearing that they turn on was okay too. I marked inside the timing belt cover with a Sharpie the date and mileage that I changed them.
