'82 GL1100 mid life refresh

Post by koshak »

Greetings from the sunny island of Cyprus.

Was reading this forum for some time gathering info, and now it is time to make my own posts.

Recently bought blindly from overseas GL1100 1982. This is the photo from the advertisement.

In the photo, she looks good.
The bike arrived some time ago. In person she was not bad as well, but not without problems, mostly cosmetics. Had a test drives. Ordered some spares. Now it is time for the refreshment.

I believe they call that "Good from far, but far from good". I'm sure you'll give her a little TLC and she'll be right.

It's just a ground wire. I don't remember off the top of my head which accessory it was for, but mine had it dangling there unused as well.

Why are you removing the engine, overhaul?...bad compression?..knocking?...mileage?...those engines can easily go 100,000+ miles with no issues, .....

I do a similar process with all aged bikes i take. As mentioned earlier, i bought this one blindly by advert overseas. She was running quite well prior to this ongoing stripping. But the main reasons for the engine removal:
1. Engine is leaking oil. Not hard but i do not like to have such a dirty engine - i will be driving her regularly.
2. All seals are old.
3. Internal condition was not known.
4. External condition requires attention.
5. Own entertainment and skills improvement - hobby it is.

24 condition of alternator socket

25 the wire for the neutral switch was extended. the reason is not clear so far - the extra length was just coiled and secured to the frame.

That stator connector is a weak spot. Recommendation is to cut it out entirely cut back the wires to make sure you have fresh (non-oxidized) copper wire, and solder them together directly without a connector.

I usually head over to Harbor Freight to buy one of their cheap tools to modify into "custom application" tools. :)

We do not have Harbor Freight here, but those pliers were cheap enough and used a lot, so fully legible for the mod. Replacement already purchased.
