Oil and antifreeze.

Post by t2oldbikes »

Not to start any debates or arguments considering the subject. It is time for me to crawl around on the floor and change oil, filter and coolant. I will hit the Motrin a couple days later.
I'm looking at my nearby department stores for oil. Motorcycle oil has gone up quite a bit the past few years. Valvoline 10w-40 and 20w-50 is $6.69 per quart at Meijers and $8.82 per quart at WalMart. A four quart change would go for $26.76 to $35.28 depending on the oil source.
Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic in a five quart jug is $27.97 at WalMart. I had very good results running it in my KLR-650 as far as overall quiet and no clutch slippage. The bottom rocker of the circle on the back of the jug indicates no friction modifiers. We are talking a 1982 bike in which synthetics were rarely seen. Has anyone had experience in the early wings using it?
Antifreeze: Strange times in that province. Asian Red, European Green, Asian Blue, GM Orange........ Reminds me of the old Poco version of "Panama Red".
Do know enough to make sure it is non-silica. Are any of the above safe for use in our bikes or should I just stay with old yeller.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Went to the Meijers the other day after deciding not to worry about synthetic. Had four quarts of the Valvoline 10w-40 in the basket and looking over saw Rotella T 15w-40 on sale for 13.99. Put the Valvoline back and saved some money. Probably paid for the oil filter with the difference.
As far as anti-freeze I hit the WalMart since the ones at the other place were not labeled borate and silica free. WalMart brands for the most part are labeled borate and silica free and are priced somewhat better then other brands. Zerex Asian Blue is labeled silicon free too. Prestones' site labeling is not real clear on it but I assume some or most of theirs are too.

Right or wrong, I use Rural King store brand 15w40 diesel oil in all my old bikes and orange gm coolant in my 1100. Regular maintenance, and lots of riding is the key to a healthy bike.

Any fluid that you buy today is way better than anything available in 1982. I've had good results using Walmart SuperTech full synthetic motorcycle oil and a good filter. Coolant: Prestone Global coolant (any make any color) It meets the requirements of Asian and European manufacturers with aluminum engines.

tparr is right. Regular mainteance and lots of riding keeps the bike and the rider happy.

Any diesel oil will be fine in that bike. I have used Supertech 15w-40 in my GL1500 with no issues whatsoever, and multiple other diesel oils (Rotella, Peak, Delo, and Supertech) in a variety of bikes as well.

On an 1100, you are probably fine with any coolant so long as the system is completely flushed before adding.
Asian blue is the correct stuff, and if you get the Peak branded stuff, it really is no more expensive than any other coolant.
