list of instructions for removing Aspencade motor

Post by dummysales »

This is a copied list from the Service Manual for removing and installing the Aspencade 1100 GLA 1983. Refer to the pictures in the manual if necessary.

1 Begin Removal of 1983 GL1100A Aspencade Engine
2 Remove the seat and top compartment.
3 Drain the radiator, then reinstall the drain plug.
4 Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter cover.
5 Reinstall the oil drain bolt.
6 Remove the left horn.
7 Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses and the fan motor connector.
8 Remove the radiator.
9 Loosen the clamp between the left and right mufflers.
10 Remove the exhaust flange nuts and the left and right muffler mounting bolts.
11 Separate and remove the mufflers.
12 Remove the crankcase breather storage tank.
13 Unplug the stator and pulse generator connectors.
14 CAUTION: When removing and installing the engine, a section of the metal brake lines has to be moved to keep them from being hit by the vacuum controller.
15 Loosen the bracket where the metal and rubber brake lines join.
16 Carefully prop the pressure control valve holder bracket on the frame cross-member as shown in the illustration, and continue with engine removal.
17 NOTE: Be sure to reinstall the brake line holder bracket and retighten the rear bracket of the brake lines during engine reinstallation.
18 Pull off the spark plug caps and disconnect the breather hose from the engine case.
19 Detach the high tension wires from the clips on the carburetor assembly.
20 Free the wire harness from the clips on back of the fan shroud and remove the shroud.
21 Disconnect the engine sensors connector (oil pressure sensor, temperature sensor, neutral switch). These are on the back of the shroud.
22 Remove the starter cable from the motor.
23 Check that the fuel valve is OFF and disconnect the fuel lines at the fuel pump.
24 Disconnect the vacuum advance hose at the No. 3 carburetor.
25 Loosen the clutch cable adjuster and remove the clutch cable.
26 Remove the carburetor inlet pipe cap bolts and loosen the clamps. Mark the pipes to identify the proper cylinder and carefully pull them straight off the carburetors. Do NOT twist the rubber sleeves.
27 Hook bungee cords under the carburetor stays and up to the handlebars to hold the carburetors clear of the engine.
28 Remove the rear brake light switch spring. (you may find it easier to also remove the switch)
29 Move the rubber boot on the driveshaft to expose the U-joint, and remove the snap ring. Push the U-joint rearward. (with the motor on the center stand the driveshaft will rotate so you can easily access the c-clip.) NOTE: the output shaft will disconnect from the engine when it is removed. (Don't remove the shaft boot if you can help it.)
30 Place a floor jack or other adjustable support under the engine. NOTE: the jack height must be continuously adjusted so that mounting bolts can be removed, and so stress is relieved from other bolts until they are removed.
31 Remove the right and left hanger bolts and brackets, the front mount bolt, and the right and left rear mount bolts.
32 Remove the left foot peg and the other nuts holding the sub-frame, then remove the sub-frame.
33 Adjust the jack and move the engine forward or frame rearward to disengage the output shaft from the U-joint.
34 Move the engine out of the frame. CAUTION: Be very careful not to bang the vacuum advance controller during removal. If the shaft is bent the ignition timing will not advance, and the pulse generator will have to be replaced.

Begin Reinstallation of Engine
1 Before installing the engine check the vacuum controller for proper operation: Remove the pulse generator cover. Attach a vacuum gauge to the vacuum tube and apply negative pressure. Advance begins at 40 mm Hg and reaches full at 100 mm Hg. Replace the pulse generator if controller does not operate correctly.
2 CAUTION: Be careful not to bang the vacuum advance controller during installation. If the shaft is bent the ignition timing will not advance, and the pulse generator assembly will have to be replaced. The engine has to be out of the frame to replace the pulse generator.
3 Grease the output shaft splines. (If you removed the shaft boot during disassembly, now's the time to put it back on the driveshaft.)
4 Carefully maneuver the engine into the frame while working to align and engage the output shaft and the U-joint. Check the vacuum advance controller often to be sure it isn't in danger of hitting the frame. Take your time, and to prevent damage, make minor adjustments .
5 Slide the U-joint forward on the output shaft and install the snap ring.
6 Complete the installation of the shaft by covering it with the boot.
7 CAUTION: Carefully align mounting points with the jack to prevent damage to mounting bolt threads, wire harness, and cables.
8 Hand tighten mounting bolts and nuts (and install parts noted) in this order:
9 The left and then the right rear mount bolt.
10 the sub-frame, foot peg and subframe bolts.
11 The forward mount bolt.
12 The right and left hanger brackets and upper engine hangar bolts, including the battery ground with the left hanger.
13 Remove the jack and torque the mounting bolts in the order shown on the diagram of page 6-9.
14 Align the notch in the carburetor rubber sleeves with the pins on the carburetors and reinstall the inlet pipes on the carburetors. Do Not Twist the rubber parts.
15 Remove the bungee cords. Check the rubber sleeves to make sure they are not twisted, then secure the pipes to the cylinder head. Tighten the clamps.
16 Run the temperature sensor, neutral switch, and oil pressor sensor wire harness through the clips on the back of the radiator shroud. Bend the clips if necessary, and connect the coupler.
17 Install the shroud and nut plate; torque the bolts.
18 Install the following:
19 starter motor cable
20 clutch cable
21 fuel lines
22 crankcase breather hose
23 vacuum controller hose
24 spark plug caps
25 Be sure to reinstall the brake line holder bracket and retighten the rear bracket of the brake lines during engine reinstallation.
26 Connect the drain tube to the crankcase breather storage tank and install the tank.
27 Route the fuel and coolant reserve overflow tubes and secure them in the clip on the center stand and bracket (with the battery breather).
28 Install the radiator. Connect the fan coupler and radiator hoses.
29 Install the left horn.
30 Install the exhaust pipes
31 Fill the radiator, then install the top compartment and seat.
32 Install the oil filter and cover.
33 Add the specified type and quantity of engine oil.
34 Adjust the clutch and throttle cable free play.
End of instructions.
