Water pump

Post by dubepj »

1982 GL1100A
Small OIL drip on weep hole bottom of water pump. research says probably bad water pump seals or O rings. Manual says to remove rad and fan.
I don't think I need to do this to change water pump?
Can I drain oil and coolant and remove housing and pull out old pump and replace with new one.
have one on order.
Thanks for advice

OK guys did more research and I know I'll have to pull the cover in front of engine. But do I really need to remove Rad and fan??

Front cover can be removed with radiator in place. But my opinion is drain and remove radiator anyway. It will save you time and severely scraped knuckles. Time to replace belts while you're in there. Maybe replace radiator hoses too.

Bloody knuckles might be a good look for you, but I'm too old for that nonsense. I'll trade a little more time for a lot less trouble.

Yes You guys are right. Took rad off 2nd time, change belts before. Parts ordered and everything cleaned. Found another leak on one of the coolant lines. Must bumped them when took off the carbs. Ordered o rings and gaskets. It's a $900. bike. now up to $1700.

These project bikes tend to go that way. I paid $500 for a low miles (20k) non-running '80 Wing. Got about $2000 in it now, plus a ton of hours. But I enjoyed the challenge and adventure. Tried to take care of every conceivable problem during the initial winter task of tearing it all down and putting it back right. Have now had 4 yrs of absolute reliable performance. Plus I am fully familiar with every part of the bike, so I don't fear tackling routine maintenance or possible future minor problems. Don't get discouraged... they are great bikes.

I've done it both ways. Seems like not taking the rad and fan off would be much faster...but it's not, because it restricts access so much that it takes way longer (and you end up with bloody knuckles).
