GL1100 clutch and shifting issues

Post by seth1kaufman »

Hello again,

I’ve finally gotten my 1982 GL1100 to turn on and ride! Nevertheless, I am now having clutch issues. I have adjusted the cable multiple times to around 1/4” of free play at the handle. It shifts hard while riding and refuses to shift into neutral from first gear while sitting still. I’ve also tried slackening the cable past 1/4” and tightening it beyond the spec, but no adjustment makes it easier to shift back into neutral. I have to turn the bike off to get it to shift into neutral. I am running Rotella T4 15W-40. With the 1982 model, I don’t believe there is a lifter pin adjustment behind the clutch cover. Is there something I can do to make shifting easier?

You can try running some Seafoam in the oil to clean up the clutch. If there is old gunk in the clutch, this can sometimes fix it. Also just putting mileage on a bike that was sitting can help to get things back in shape.

Rambozo,

You were right, the more miles I ride the bike, the better and easier shifting becomes. Thank you
