Hello, I have a new (to me) 1981 GL1100 Interstate with a random hose sticking out of the side. I assumed it was a crankcase vent or something along those lines, got scared when a bunch of smoke came out of it after a ride, then traced it back and realized it connects to some random plastic piece.. which was right up against the exhaust, hence the smoke.
Anyone have any idea what this might be?

You are right, it is the catch can for the vent system. It should go to the air cleaner, number 15 in this diagram.

Re: Mystery Hose & Component
I did some more poking around on my bike and it seems like the previous owner disconnected all of the crankcase ventilation equipment.
So if I'm understanding the diagrams correctly- the crankcase breather in this pic needs to connect to the hose inlet above: And then the catch can connects to this hose coming out of the top of the airbox behind the choke cable: Do I have those connections right or are they reversed?
I think I'll just replace them with a single bit of hose.. I don't see the need for all those connectors in the parts diagram.
