Output shaft?
Has anyone had the output shaft in the trans go bad? I started getting a clunk with a bit of what felt like slipping when a load is put on the trans in the lower gears. I removed the rear drive and the C-clip on the driveshaft and both the shaft and drive unit are good. When I rotate the output shaft there's a lot of slack in it and a bit of a clack at either end of it's movement when the slack is taken up. My plan is to next pull the engine and take the rear cover off and pull the output shaft. If the shaft is good then the trans is bad and I'll start looking for another engine.

More likely it's a worn U-joint at the swingarm pivot. That's the most common wear item in the driveline (except for splines that have not been properly lubricated).

Re: Output shaft?
IIRC, the output shaft has a spring that acts as a cushion between the shaft and transmission. I believe you can inspect this by removing the plate on the side of the block just aft of the fuel pump... I've read of others who've had a similar clunk, checked through everything from the final drive forward, to no avail. I have never heard of a failure, but anything is possible...
